Player: Walker Jenkins |
School: South Brunswick HS (NC) Position(s): OF |
Height: 6’3″ Weight: 205 lbs. Bats: Left Throws: Right |
Hit: Bat loads with hands right at shoulder, little to no wasted movement. Slight bat wrap. Very quick to the zone, bat stays in well. Mild leg kick, keeps balanced and ready to fire at all times. Good pitch recognition. Could be true plus tool. |
Power: Will start as more gap power but will easily become home run power. Has potential to average 30 HR a season, with more potential in the body. Quick wrists and good hip fire uses full body to help create power while staying balanced. Plus to better future. https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js |
Run: Average now, will likely end a bit below as he matures and fills out. Middle of the order and corner outfield profile. |
Arm: Plus, easily enough for right. |
Glove: Center fielder currently and will probably start in center in pro ball, but eventually will likely have to move off to a corner. Reads and arm could make him a plus defender in right. |
Other: Hamate injury in summer of 2022 prevented him from competing in showcase circuit. Committed to North Carolina. |
Summary: There is plenty of debate as to who the top prep player is in this draft, Jenkins or Max Clark, and there might not be a wrong answer. While Clark is the more sure bet to stay up the middle and be a plus hitter, Jenkins brings the plus power in the bat and arm. It will likely come down to what a team puts prioritizes, hit and defense, or power. A team that wants a power bat that will still make plenty of contact should absolutely go Jenkins and not think twice. He has the future potential of an All-Star right fielder in the middle of an order who could settle in and be a lock for 30 HRs a season. The hamate injury taking away his showcase availability does still leave some slight questions as the bulk of his play in front of scouts has come with a metal bat, but the game should transition to wood just fine. |
