Summary:
After two solid seasons with Alabama and a great summer on the Cape, Matthew Heiberger heads to his draft year with a ton of momentum on his side. The lanky lefty figures to play a huge role on an Alabama staff looking to disrupt an SEC schedule with more firepower than ever, and if he can do so with success, he will be sure to shoot up draft boards this summer.

Mechanically, Heiberger draws comparisons to a less exaggerated Garrett Crochet with his release point and tucked glove at release. He delivers from a low ¾ arm slot, but tends to short arm through delivery and not finish his motion, leading to some arm-side misses. Otherwise, the delivery is very mechanically sound and controlled, and he repeats it well from the windup and stretch.

For his pitch mix, Heiberger has relied heavily on his fastball throughout his collegiate career, throwing it over 80% of the time. It will sit in the mid 90’s, topping out at 96, with good arm side run and solid carry through the zone. He will complement it with a changeup, curveball, and occasional slider, though they are used sparsely, and all are still developing into true secondaries. The curveball has solid break and works well with the fastball, but his best secondary as of now is the changeup. It has great depth to it, tunnelling well with the fastball as well as having some nice break.

For Heiberger to take the next step in his development, he will have to get more comfortable utilizing his other pitches, as eventually, hitters will get too good to be thrown fastballs over 80% of the time. However, he has all the tools to do so, and if he can, look for him to be one of the better lefties coming out of the SEC this draft season.
