| Summary: Fiene, a sophomore at Odessa College has taken what is now a more conventional route through the college ranks. A freshmen last season with Tarleton State, the right hander saw his ups and downs as many underclassmen do. The jump from high school baseball to the Division 1 level is an adjustment, even for the most highly touted prospects. Tarleton, like many schools now, chose to reload and replenish through the transfer portal. That left Fiene looking for his next opportunity. He wasted no time getting to work adding strength and refining his arsenal. The righty turned heads in the fall with a jump in velocity and better command of his 4 pitch mix. The 4 pitch mix includes a fastball that has peaked at 95mph with arm side run. He has comfortably sat 92-94 mph. His best secondary pitch is the slider, sitting 82-85 mph with late hard bite and tunnels well with the fastball. He mixes in a curveball at 78-80 mph and a change up in the 85-86 mph range. Fiene moves fluidly, staying athletic down the hill. He hides the ball well, coming at opposing hitters from a true three quarters slot. He utilizes every bit of the 6’1″ 195 lbs. frame. Though he has added size and strength, there is still more physical maturity to be had. His first start this spring with the Wranglers took place against Grayson College, at Tarleton State. The righty got to display his updated repertoire in front of his old coaching staff where he went 2 innings, punching out 2 against the perennial power Vikings. There has been no shortage of big league clubs checking in with Fiene this off season. He has signed to play with Dallas Baptist next year, a program that is known for churning out quality arms. With further development of his arsenal and physical maturity that is sure to come, either option points to a bright future for Fiene. | |||||||||||
