| Summary: It may have been a rough showing for Brazil in the WBC, but one name that stood out was Joseph Contreras. He may be only 17 years of age, but he looked more than comfortable against some of the biggest names in the sport, and showed why he is committed to Vanderbilt with a potential to go high in the draft this summer. Repertoire-wise, Contreras has a selection of above-average pitches he can call on. His fastball is electric, topping out at 98 with solid movement and spin. He also utilizes a forkball, a pitch he has described as having worked on since he was 10 years old and has great diving action as it approaches the plate. He rounds out the mix with a hybrid cutter/slider that gets in on hitters’ hands, inducing tons of weak contact. | |||||||||||
