2023 MLB Draft: Thomas White, LHP, Phillips Academy (MA)

Player: Thomas White
School: Phillips Academy (MA)                                                         Position(s): LHP
Height: 6’5″                      Weight: 210                      Bats: Left                      Throws: Left
Pitches:
Fastball: 94-96, Velo is easy, really runs to the arm side. Has strong downhill plane
Changeup: 80-86, inconsistent, flashes of being something, can overthrow and lose feel for it easily. At best it has late action and gets swings over, at worst it is spiked into ground. On days without good feel, tends to go away from it completely.
Breaking Ball: 75-81, Has a couple different looks, may be a curve and slider, but not much separation in shape. Higher velo can be sharp action, lower has a real 2 plane break to it. Both versions get really bad swings. True plus potential.
Delivery/Mechanics: Long lefty but with plenty of control. Excellent balance with good leg drive. 3/4 slot with low effort. Checks all the boxes of a starter. When in stretch the levers speed up and command drifts.
Other: Vanderbilt commit.
Summary: If White winds up being the best pro pitcher to come out of the 2023 draft, it will not be a shock at all. He is a tall lefty who gets into the mid-90s with ease and still has room to fill out. He already has two plus offerings and the change has flashed plus but the consistency is well off currently. As he gets a better feel for that change and a more distinctive difference between the change and slider versions of his breaking ball, he will have an elite arsenal. White is a high floor prep arm out of the Northeast, which is about are rare as it gets.
