2023 MLB Draft: Cole Carrigg, C/INF/OF, San Diego State

Player: Cole Carrigg
School: San Diego State                                                 Position(s): C/INF/OF
Height: 6’3″                   Weight: 200 lbs.                   Bats: Both                       Throws: Right
Hit: Genuine switch hitter with a similar stroke on both sides. Good balance, has calmed the body in his swing in his time with SDSU. Foot off ground a long time but gets down in plenty of time. Lands with very wide base. Takes stride out completely with two strikes and starts in typical landing position. Expands zone too much. Good bat to ball skills.
Power: Very limited, only seven home runs in 526 college plate appearances. More gap power, could turn into a guy with plenty of doubles but might never reach double digits home runs, low teens at most.
Run: Plus runner, plus athlete. Plays better in field and getting the extra base than pure base stealer.
Arm: In person game only had one chance to really throw, underwhelmed. Have seen tape that suggests plus arm possible. In pregame certainly looked above-average, enough it won’t create positional limitation.
Glove: Average overall, but plus in terms of versatility. Played eight positions in game (including pitcher), teammates said he has seen time at first which would be all nine.
Other:
Summary: After hitting .388 his sophomore year and seeing the majority of his time at catcher, short, and center, Carrigg made a name for himself as the most versatile player in the 2023 class. This year he has played exclusively as the Aztec centerfielder, and has looked very good there. He can play in the dirt but will never be more than average there, and he may actually have the most upside as an extremely athletic catcher. One concern is his strikeout rate has gone up each year while his walk rate has gone the other way. Once a guy with the upside to be a first round selection, he is more likely going to be a late day one pick or early day two pick with the future role more of a super utility guy than a reliable starting position player.
