| Summary: Carns is a physical righthanded hitter with explosive hands and above-average raw power, particularly to the pull side. His swing is compact and leveraged, producing loud contact with exit velocities over 105 and 400+ foot bombs. He’s begun to show improved balance and strike-zone awareness, with the ability to drive the ball to all fields. While spin can still give him some trouble, the bat speed and strength give him the ingredients of a dangerous offensive catcher with middle-of-the-order potential. Defensively, Carns shows rare athleticism for the position. A plus runner for a catcher, he moves with agility behind the plate, blocks well, and flashes a strong, accurate arm with consistent sub-2.0 pop times. His receiving continues to progress and already shows polish beyond his years, aided by his lateral quickness and body control. The defensive floor is solid, and his athleticism gives him versatility few backstops can match as he has shown he can play outfield, although he is a no doubt catcher long term. Drafted by Arizona in 2024 but unsigned, Carns now looks like one of the more complete catcher profiles in the class as a draft eligible sophomore. With a unique blend of athleticism, raw power, and improving receiving skills, he projects as a true catcher long term with the ceiling of an impact bat at a premium position. | |||||||||||
