| Summary: As far as projectable frames go, they don’t get much better than that of OKSU’s Hunter Watkins. Standing an impressive 6’9”, Watkins is an imposing presence on the mound, with the stuff, makeup, and body of work to match. The big righty impressed in his first year at OKSU after transferring from Grand Canyon, and will look to build on that as he attempts to make his draft case this spring. In his repertoire, Watkins boasts 3 solid offerings. His fastball sits in the low 90’s, and though it doesn’t have a ton of movement, it operates effectively enough to keep hitters from sitting on either of his breaking pitches. His slider will average around 82 mph, with solid movement and gets a good amount of whiffs. His best pitch, however, is a big, breaking curveball that sits around 70 mph, with huge break and is used extremely effectively to keep hitters off balance. He displays good control with all 3 offerings, giving up very few free passes throughout his collegiate career. Mechanically, Watkins is very standard, with a slow, deliberate delivery that gives way to a slightly lower-than-average release point, while leveraging his tall frame to still deliver downhill and produce a unique approach angle on his pitches. He is comfortable from both the windup and the stretch, and holds runners well. If he maintains his performance, he figures to hear his name called on Day 2 or 3 of the draft, but should the velocity go up a tick or two, don’t be surprised if teams take a chance on his frame on Day 1. | |||||||||||
