| Summary: For a Rutgers team that will look to make a run in the Big 10 this spring, Yomar Carreras will be one of the most important pieces. The New Brunswick native figures to slot in as the starting SS this spring after spending a lot of time there as a freshman. Coming off being named to the Big 10 All-Freshman team last spring and to the Cape Cod All-Star Game in the summer, look for Carreras to play a big part for the Scarlet Knights in his sophomore season. Offensively, Carreras presents a very raw profile. He is equally effective from both sides of the plate, and when he makes contact, he is able to spray line drives to both sides of the field as well as spoil good putaway pitches. However, he is an extremely aggressive hitter, swinging at just about everything he sees, so for him to take the next step forward, he needs to limit those tendencies just a little bit, as his impressive bat-to-ball skills are the only thing preventing his strikeout rate from spiking to unsustainable levels. This will allow him not only to walk more, and take advantage of his above average speed and base stealing skills, but will force pitchers to put the ball in the strike zone and give him the chance to do damage. Defensively, Carreras profiles extremely well. He is a smooth, rangy defender who can easily play either middle infield position at a plus level. He plays very aggressively, and has never seen a groundball that he doesn’t think he can get to. This does lead him to try to make some near-impossible plays, making throws at times where he should just hold onto the ball, but make no mistake, Carreras is already a very talented defender and will only get better with more experience and reps. | |||||||||||
