Summary:
Smith’s combination of deception, extension, and power gives him some of the most unique traits among left-handers in the minors. His low three-quarters slot and crossfire delivery create a flat approach angle and heavy life on a mid-90s fastball that can still reach 98–99 mph when everything syncs. The pitch jumps on hitters thanks to late ride and arm-side run, and his hard, mid-80s slider is a legitimate bat-misser—tight, two-plane movement that devastates lefties and keeps right-handers honest. Both offerings have backed up slightly since college, but the raw characteristics still grade near double-plus. The changeup, firm in the high 80s with late tumble, remains a work in progress but shows flashes of becoming a usable third weapon.

The delivery is short-armed and low-slot, giving Smith deception but also occasional timing inconsistencies that show up in his walk rate and strike percentage. He’s cleaned up the motion since college and found a more repeatable tempo, though command lapses and health blips continue to raise questions about long-term durability. When everything holds together, he fills the zone with elite movement and angle, missing bats at a top-of-the-scale clip and generating ugly swings even on pitches out of the zone.

Chicago’s fifth overall pick in 2024, Smith carries the competitive makeup and power stuff to move quickly once fully healthy. The fastball–slider foundation alone could push him to the bigs, and continued progress with command and the changeup would solidify his path as a true mid-rotation or better starter. If durability or strikes waver, his two-pitch dominance could still make him one of the game’s most overpowering late-inning lefties.
