Summary:
Matthews’ 2025 season never fully stabilized after shoulder soreness interrupted what had been a promising velocity bump early in his pro career. The fastball settled back into the 92–94 range, and the delivery lost some of its usual rhythm, leading to backed-up command and more traffic than expected. Even so, the underlying mix still shows real bite: a changeup with heavy armside movement that plays as a true out pitch, a firmer mid-80s slider with improved definition, and an occasional curveball he can land for strikes.

Pitchability and feel remain the spine of the profile. The changeup continues to grade near the top of the scale—he’s long been willing to double and triple up on it, and it holds shape against hitters on both sides. The slider took a notable step forward in pro ball, flashing late depth when he stays on top, and past looks included a cutter variant that helped him navigate right-handers. When timing is right, the entire arsenal works in sequence and the fastball shows the carry needed to set everything else up.

Long-term projection still points to a stabilizing starter if the strike throwing rebounds. Health and mechanical cleanup are the hurdles between him and a mid-rotation lane, but the ingredients are still intact: multiple viable secondaries, a plus-plus changeup that can anchor a plan, and a history of sequencing and competitiveness dating back to college. A return to consistent command is the swing factor between innings-eating reliability and something more.
