| Summary: Had he declared for the draft this past summer, Carson Ballard would likely have been a mid-to-late round selection. Instead, he decided to return to Georgia Tech in order to finish his biomedical engineering degree, and in the process, will likely bump his draft stock even higher, if he can continue the success he had this summer in his second stint with the Y-D Red Sox. The redshirt junior will have to improve his command a touch, but a solid repertoire and unique mechanics should make him an interesting prospect for teams this summer. Mechanically, Ballard works with an extremely unusual delivery. His leg kick is long and double-clutches at the beginning, almost in an Alex Cobb/Aaron Nola style, something he only started doing this spring midway through the collegiate season. He delivers from a fairly average arm angle, and is comfortable from both the windup and the stretch. He doesn’t get a ton of extension, and his arm circle is a little shorter than average. He does disguise his pitches well, with no noticeable change in his delivery between the three offerings. In his repertoire, Ballard features 3 solid pitches. His fastball will sit in the low 90’s, with spin and good life out of the hand, inducing lots of groundballs with good late sink. He pairs it with a changeup that has good late break, tunnels well with the fastball, and will sit in the low to mid 80’s. He also features a slider with sharp break as it approaches the plate, generating lots of whiffs with its movement. The pitches all work well together, and Ballard mixes them up effectively, keeping hitters off balance. | |||||||||||
