| Summary: Burnett’s rise through the Colorado ranks has culminated into a highly anticipated senior campaign for the two way prospect. Burnett’s (6’0″, 200 lbs.) pure athleticism has been on full display while at Erie High School. He’s made an impact in countless ways; behind the dish, roaming the outfield, in the lineup, and of course…on the mound. At the plate, Burnett brings a simple, compact, yet powerful swing. He begins with a small leg lift back toward the plate while keeping the hands back. The simplistic approach with minimized movement allows for Burnett to recognize pitches early. He is capable of leaving the yard and has shown consistent gap to gap power. Burnett displays an above average IQ, executing situationally when the time calls for it. Defensively, Burnett has made an impact in the grass and on the dirt. He shows above average instincts in the outfield, capable of covering significant ground. The arm is strong (95mph outfield velo) and accurate. He has also shown the ability to man the infield, flashing athleticism at 3B, SS, and 2B. Though the upside is certainly there as a position player, Burnett’s ultimate calling may be on the mound. He brings a four pitch mix to the bump, highlighted by a fastball that spins consistently over 2,300 rpms. Topping 94mph this past fall, Burnett sits in the 91-93mph range with upwards of 20″ of IVB. The top secondary pitch is a knuckle curve that is thrown with intent. Ranging from 78-80mph (>2,500rpm), the breaking ball shows late bite with considerable vertical break. Burnett also relies on a low 80’s change up with arm side run that plays extremely well with his fastball. He has recently added a mid to upper 80’s cutter that has been effective. As this pitch develops, expect to see more of a slider profile. Much like his approach at the plate, Burnett finds success with minimizing excess movement mechanically. He tends to work with a higher tempo while staying linear to the plate. Burnett is also known to keep hitters off balance by varying that tempo and can come with an array of arm angles. A fierce competitor, Burnett wants the ball when it matters most. He craves competition and has shown the ability to raise the level of play of those around him. A signee of BYU, Burnett expects to make an impact on both sides of the ball for the Cougars. Should he continue his ascent, Burnett will continue to catch the eyes of big league clubs this spring. | |||||||||||
