| Summary: There are certainly many paths to the MLB draft for pitchers, but Lance Davis’ has been one of the more unique ones. Davis redshirted his freshman year at Arkansas before transferring to TCU, meaning he will enter his draft year without throwing a pitch at the collegiate level. He did pitch well this summer in the Cape, and if he can recreate those results in Fort Worth, look for him to turn heads despite a limited sample size. Mechanically, Davis has a very solid move that he repeats well, despite some arm slowdown. He falls to the 1B side mildly during his motion but still gets downhill decently enough, utilizing a ¾ arm slot out of a quick delivery. He works through the ball well, following through consistently on all pitches. In his repertoire, Davis features a mix of 3 pitches. He utilizes a good sinking fastball, sitting in the low 90’s and getting to the bottom of the zone consistently. He also utilizes a hard slider with late break at 85-87 that he has a good feel for and will throw in any count, as well as a firm changeup at 83-85 with good horizontal movement. All three pitches are well developed, and played well in their limited use against Cape opposition, and will only get better as they develop further. For Davis, the big question is how well his stuff will play across his first, and possibly only, collegiate season. It has fared well so far against more than capable batters on the Cape, and if he can maintain and improve from that performance this spring, look for his name to be called earlier than expected during the draft. | |||||||||||
