Summary:
Few profiles in the minors carry the raw power that Montes brings to the table. Among the highest exit velocities in the system with the frame to back it up, the swing is geared entirely for damage in the air — a big leg kick he controls well for the size, elite barrel quality when he connects, and the ability to drive the ball out of any part of the ballpark. Tied for third in all of minor league baseball in home runs at just 20 years old is a data point that demands attention regardless of the contact questions.

Those contact questions are real and they define the range of outcomes. Strikeout rates at Double-A have pushed into uncomfortable territory and below-average zone contact and whiff rates create a profile where at-bats can disappear quickly against quality pitching. The walk rate and some discernment with two strikes give the approach enough foundation to offset the swing-and-miss at times, and a shift back to a damage-focused philosophy has allowed the power to show up more consistently after a contact-oriented approach suppressed it. Approach refinement and spin recognition will determine whether the power translates at the highest level or gets neutralized before it can.

Defensively, right field is the current home and the strongest arm in the system is a genuine weapon there — the outfield assist total reflects how seriously opponents have to respect it. The size and range limitations point toward first base eventually, where the bat will need to carry the full weight of the evaluation without the arm adding defensive value. The ceiling is a 40-homer impact regular. The floor is a player who never harnesses the contact rates enough to stick. The gap between those outcomes is as wide as the profile itself.
