| Summary: The fastball is a legitimate weapon. Sitting 95-97 and touching 100 with carry, arm-side run and a low release point that adds deception, the heater plays up in the zone and generates swing-and-miss with above-average command that allows it to be located consistently rather than just thrown hard. The changeup has been the most reliable secondary at its best — flashing plus with fade and tumble that gives him a genuine weapon against opposite-handed hitters. A slider that has shown above-average potential when kept low rounds out a three-pitch mix that has the depth to support a rotation role when all three are working. The durability is the defining question. A back stress reaction cost him the bulk of last season and the frame has never handled a full starter’s workload — the stuff returned intact after the injury, including the velocity, but the ability to stay on the mound over a full season has been the persistent barrier between the profile and the mid-rotation ceiling the stuff supports. The AFL return with velocity intact was an encouraging sign, but the health question won’t fully answer itself until the workload holds up over a meaningful stretch. The power reliever profile is the more likely outcome and a comfortable one — the fastball-changeup combination in shorter stints is a legitimate weapon, and the slider gives him a third look that can play in high-leverage situations when it’s on. The rotation path remains open if the health holds and the slider consistency takes a step forward, but the risk associated with the durability history makes the bullpen the safer projection. | |||||||||||
