Summary:
The slider is among the best in the country at the college level and it’s not a close call. A shape-shifting low-to-mid-80s breaking ball with elite whiff rates that he’ll throw to either side in any count — commanding it with confidence and varying the shape depending on the matchup gives Bayles a carrying secondary that most pitchers never develop. The ultra-competitive approach and feel for the pitch elevate it further, and the strikeout ability it generates is a legitimate separator.

The fastball is where the starter path gets complicated. Sitting in the low 90s with cut life, the inconsistent zone presence limits its ability to set up the slider and keep hitters from sitting on the breaking ball — without a reliable fastball to command to both sides, the slider-first approach becomes easier to anticipate as competition improves. Simplified mechanics and strong body control give the fastball command projection, but it’s the carrying concern that keeps the back-end starter ceiling from being a clean projection. A developing mid-80s changeup with tumble gives him a third pitch to build toward, and continued refinement there would give the arsenal the depth to hold up against a lineup multiple times.

The high-leverage reliever profile is a comfortable safety net where the slider can operate without the demands of a fastball-first setup — in shorter stints the breaking ball alone is devastating. The back-end starter ceiling is realistic if the fastball command tightens and the changeup develops into a weapon, and the projection in the delivery gives that outcome a legitimate path.
