Summary:
One of the best pitchers not in Major League Baseball, and the path there remains complicated. A Cuban national pitching in NPB, Moinelo has been widely reported to have no interest in defecting — and without doing so, there is no clean MLB access route available to him under the current rules governing Cuban players. The result is a front-end caliber arm that MLB organizations can scout but not pursue, making him one of the most fascinating figures in international baseball.

The arsenal is as complete as any starter’s in the world. A four-seamer that sits 92-93 and touches 96 with late life and solid zone command operates from a high three-quarter slot with a lower-than-expected release point that generates carry and ride beyond what the velocity suggests. A mid-80s gyro slider with intentional shape variation — deeper against right-handed hitters, tighter and lifted against lefties — is a trusted weapon with plus chase and whiff rates. A curveball with a spike grip and elite spin generates an out-of-the-sky drop that can bully left-handed hitters with horizontal sweep, while a three-finger changeup with late sink and fade is the pitch that ties the arsenal together as the primary separator against right-handed hitters. An upper-80s cutter and a newer sweeper with plus potential in limited usage round out a six-pitch mix that covers every shape and movement direction.

The 2025 Pacific League MVP after successfully transitioning from elite reliever to frontline starter — the transition itself is a statement on the stuff and pitching IQ. If a pathway to MLB ever opens, the front-end starter ceiling is well-supported by what the arsenal already is.
