Summary:
Clean, low-effort delivery from a physical frame with a short arm path and good extension give Hering a starter’s look that the stuff hasn’t fully caught up to yet. The fastball sits 91-95 with ride and carry that plays well elevated, and the extension allows it to play above the raw velocity — the most advanced piece of a profile that is still finding its shape. A slider with sharp two-plane action is the best current secondary and already flashes as a weapon, while a curveball in the upper 70s operates in a similar velocity band and provides a different shape. The changeup is the secondary with the most long-term potential and the developmental priority that will ultimately decide the role.

The command has been inconsistent enough to push the projection toward relief, where the fastball and slider can operate without the demands of executing a full four-pitch mix through a lineup. The curveball and changeup both need to develop into reliable offerings before the rotation path becomes a clean projection — the pieces are present but the consistency and separation between pitches needs to grow with continued reps. The clean delivery and physical frame give the rotation upside a foundation to chase, but the command trajectory is the variable that makes the reliever outcome the more realistic near-term path.
