| Summary: Among the most prolific power hitters in college baseball, Coats generates some of the best exit velocities in the country and it shows up in games rather than just in batting practice. A wide base with an exaggerated leg lift and counter-rotation creates the conditions for easy loft and damage to all fields — the power is at least plus and flashes well beyond that when he gets to his best swings. The approach is more controlled than most profiles with this kind of raw power, attacking pitches in the zone aggressively while keeping chase rates below what similar power hitters typically produce. Faring better against spin than velocity at this stage gives the hit tool a functional shape that allows the power to show up consistently. The swing is built for damage and the tradeoffs that come with it are real. Premium velocity above the hands and breaking balls off the plate create swing-and-miss that will likely translate into elevated strikeout totals as the pitch quality improves at the next level — the inherent commitment to driving the ball in the air carries contact risk that the power will need to offset. Getting to the pull side more efficiently is an ongoing focus that would allow even more of the raw power to show up in games. Defensively, the athleticism gives the profile more flexibility than a pure 1B evaluation might suggest — above-average mobility gives third base a chance and corner outfield experience keeps additional options open. First base is the most realistic long-term home, and the bat is loud enough to carry the evaluation there without needing the defense to add significant value. The middle-of-the-lineup upside is real if the approach continues to hold up against better pitching as the collegiate career builds toward the draft. | |||||||||||
