Summary:
Signed for a modest bonus after showing limited velocity at a tryout, De La Torre is one of the more compelling development stories in the system. The Giants saw command and projection where others saw an arm stuck in the low 80s — the fastball now sits 94-96 and touches 98 from a low three-quarter slot with a big leg kick and an exaggerated stride generating excellent extension that allows it to play well above the raw velocity. The cross-body action and low release point create a difficult angle for hitters, and the pitch plays best spotted up in the zone where the approach angle and carry combine to generate elite swing-and-miss rates.

The slider is the co-headliner — a mid-80s offering with two-plane break and horizontal bite that generates whiffs against hitters from both sides and plays well when buried low in the zone. The fastball-slider combination gives the profile a legitimate two-pitch foundation that already profiles as a left-handed neutralizer at minimum. A changeup and curveball both appear occasionally as bridge pitches and strike-stealers but neither has developed into a true weapon yet — getting one of them to take a meaningful step is the developmental priority that separates a back-end starter from a high-leverage reliever role.

The athleticism and repeatable delivery give the profile more starter viability than the current two-pitch reliance might suggest, and the strike-throwing ability is ahead of schedule for his age and background. The fringe-average command trending toward average gives the arsenal a platform to build from — a third offering that hitters have to respect would unlock the rotation path in full.
