| Summary: College baseball had a number of standouts emerge from 2026, but perhaps none were as notable as Hunter Ray. Ray posted some absurd numbers at Fairleigh Dickinson, tying for second in the country with 32 home runs and posting an OPS north of 1.250. His junior year will be pivotal, as if he can replicate or come close to his sophomore success with new school Vanderbilt, he will position himself as one of the better outfielders in the 2027 class. Offensively, Ray took an enormous leap forward in his sophomore year, and presents an extremely well rounded profile. The power grabs your attention immediately, but it disguises the fact that Ray is an extremely well rounded hitter, with an advanced feel for the strike zone. The swing does lead to some questions, with a Spencer Jones-esque load and a long swing that leads to some swing-and-miss, especially against velocity at the top of the zone. So far, his swing decisions and intelligence at the plate have masked these shortcomings – whether he can continue to do so in the SEC is the big question. He is also an advanced baserunner, stealing 24 bases in 27 attempts this past season. Defensively, Ray is a very solid outfielder, whose arm and ranginess will allow him to play wherever he is needed on the outfield grass. His speed allows him to track down fly balls all over the place, and it is likely organizational need rather than any shortcomings on Ray’s part that will determine where in the outfield he ends up long term. For Ray, just as it is for so many transfers, his junior season will be extremely important. If he can prove that his skills are able to translate to the SEC, he will be a legitimate first round draft prospect. Even if he can’t, it is likely that teams will bet on the toolsiness of the profile, but a successful season for the Commodores could make Ray one of the headliners of the 2027 class. | |||||||||||
