| Summary: Following a solid freshman campaign for UCLA this spring, Cervantes headed to the Cape and flat-out dominated. With an ERA close to 1, Cervantes easily took home the CCBL’s B.F.C. Whitehouse Award, given to the top pitcher in the league each summer. As he heads towards his sophomore year with the Bruins, he will be looking to carry that momentum forward. In his arsenal, Cervantes features five pitches, including one that he has added and refined over the course of the summer. His fastball has sat in the low to mid 90’s with good life out of the hand, paired with a swerving changeup that can make hitters look absolutely silly. For his breaking options, he turns to both a slider and curveball, both of which have taken huge strides this summer in terms of how he commands his spin. Finally, Cervantes added a cutter to the mix this summer, which is still being tinkered with, but has early signs of being a quality addition to an already deep repertoire. For his delivery, Cervantes utilizes an athletic move that helps him generate good velocity out of his frame. He dips his right shoulder fairly significantly while rearing back, before getting on top of the baseball well at release. | |||||||||||
