| Summary: In a sport where so many are looking to replicate the latest trend, Volantis brings a uniqueness few can match. The frame is what you’d draw up if you’re designing your ideal southpaw. At 6’6″, 220 lbs. the lefty has long levers and a durable frame that should withstand the rigors of a professional season. His distinctiveness however, is not found in his physical makeup. Volantis has an operation and approach that allow his arsenal to play in a way that has produced dominance in the best conference in the country. Working from the first base side of the rubber, Volantis attacks hitters from a nearly 7 ft launch angle. It’s a higher arm slot generating true downward tilt on all his offerings. The arm stroke is long, which helps create deception on the backside. He’s able to repeat the delivery well and tunnels his primarily three pitch mix effectively. By today’s standards, his repertoire is not “overpowering”. However, his results would suggest otherwise. The fastball will top 94 mph and sit in the 90-93 mph range. It has life, with legitimate sink and run. His top secondary is a curveball that rivals any other in the country. With 11-5 shape and late downward bite, its a plus pitch with room to get even better. It’s a low 80’s offering he couples with a harder slider with more horizontal action in the mid-80’s. Through his first two seasons at Texas, Volantis has put up numbers that would be tough to do anywhere, let alone the SEC. A 2.03 era, over 146 innings where he’s punched out 209 just scratch the surface on the projectable left-hander. A true strike thrower, he has only surrendered 40 BB’s over those 146 innings. In addition to the physical prowess and numbers consistent with a Friday night guy, Volantis brings a moxie and presence to the mound that point to future ace. | |||||||||||
Eric Dillinger is currently the Head Baseball Coach at Erie High School, entering his 4th season as the Head Coach and 9th season overall. Dillinger was the pitching coach at Erie prior to becoming head coach. At the club level, he has coached nationally for multiple organizations including the Colorado Yard Dawgs, the Colorado Rockies Scout program, and USA Prime. Dillinger is also currently the General Manager for D-BAT NW Denver. In addition to his duties as GM, he is also a senior pitching instructor. He is certified in Rapsodo Pitching and is also Driveline Certified (Pitch Design). Beyond coaching on the field, Dillinger enjoys helping athletes in the recruiting process. He has helped over 40 athletes find homes at the next level.
