| Summary: Aguayo spent his freshman year paired up the middle with Roch Cholowsky, playing second base while the more established shortstop held down the position — but the long-term picture points the other way, and this spring is shaping up as the real test of whether he can hold shortstop himself. What he’s shown defensively so far only supports that shift: quick to unload the ball when turning two, clean body control on the move, and comfortable enough to throw accurately even while still in motion. He’s flashed range to both sides of the bag, including at least one highlight-caliber diving play up the middle. The bat has trailed the glove to this point, but the swing has visibly improved across looks. Early evaluations flagged some extra movement in the hands as he loaded, but more recent looks show a cleaner setup — the shoulders close well in the load, he gets his hands back efficiently, and he’s letting his weight drift forward enough to really turn through his back leg and drive the ball, generating real bat speed in the process. That trajectory is the more meaningful signal than where the bat graded a year ago, and it points toward a hitter still finding his present form rather than one with a capped ceiling. The shortstop test is the swing factor for the spring — the actions, hands, and body control offer real reason for confidence that he sticks there, and doing so will meaningfully raise the offensive bar he needs to clear given the premium nature of the position.
