| Summary: Ostergard spent much of his high school career playing alongside Taj Marchand, a first-round talent at the same position, and used that shared spotlight to build a real track record of his own on the summer circuit. A right-handed hitter with a genuinely unconventional setup — an unusually extended pre-swing hand position that he keeps through much of the swing, working from a broad stance with a forward shift that can drift toward the pull side at times — he’s made it work through pure feel and bat-to-ball ability rather than textbook mechanics. It looks different from most swings in his class, but the results back it up: he strung together long stretches of contact-first at-bats without a single whiff and was a reliable table-setter all summer. The swing generates more of its action from the arms and top half than the lower body, and while that unconventional pattern will draw real scrutiny on whether it holds up against better velocity as he advances, nothing in the track record so far suggests it’s holding him back. Power currently plays mostly to the alleys — he’s shown the ability to drive the ball with backspin into open space, and can occasionally reach the seats to his pull side, but this isn’t shaping up as a big home run threat, more a hit-first bat that should produce doubles over home runs. Defensively, shortstop is the settled long-term home. He’s got the range, quick out of his stance, and fluid hands and feet to handle the position, backed by an arm that’s continued improving. He’s also an above-average runner who plays with real intent on the bases and in the field. The overall bet here is a polished, hit-driven shortstop whose game works more on polish and instinct than any one standout tool — the swing mechanics carry some real evaluator skepticism attached, but the bat-to-ball track record and defensive instincts give him a legitimate foundation as an everyday middle-infield prospect. | |||||||||||
