Summary:
Dean is a physically mature, sturdy-framed righthander with a fastball that’s climbed into the mid-90s, delivered with real carry and arm-side life that’s consistently gotten hitters to expand the zone and miss, despite a release that doesn’t stand out visually. He’s carried the pitch through a transfer to a new program and continued producing at a high level, with the big league frame to support carrying a starter’s workload if the rest of the profile develops the way evaluators hope.

The breaking-ball mix features two distinct pitches. The curveball is a firmer, downer-shaped breaking ball that’s flashed swing-and-miss ability across multiple looks, while a separate, firm slider in the low-80s has emerged as his most consistent secondary of late, with the shape adjustable enough to create more sweep against right-handed hitters when needed. The changeup rounds out the mix with real depth and fade when it’s landing well, though i
t remains inconsistent rather than a fully trusted weapon at this stage.
Command is the swing skill that will ultimately decide the outcome here. It currently grades as average at best, and the strike-throwing questions are directly tied to how his role ultimately shakes out — real starter equity exists in the size, four-pitch mix, and present stuff, but until the command sharpens, a shorter relief role remains just as plausible an outcome. If the strike-throwing takes the expected step forward alongside continued changeup development, there’s a real path to a solid, back-end rotation role; if it doesn’t, the loud stuff should still play up in shorter stints.
