| Summary: Smith is a lively athlete with a quick arm, and the fastball is his lead pitch. It sits 93-96 and touches 98 with carry, and there’s strength left to add to his frame. A lost season of development early in his pro career held him back, and he’s just now getting steady starts. The changeup is his best pitch. It’s a mid-80s offering with fade and sink, and he can throw it for strikes or use it to get hitters to swing at pitches off the plate. The breaking pitches are still unsettled, a cutter, a slider in the upper 80s, and a curveball in the upper 70s, and none of them grades better than fringy yet. All three have some potential. His control has gotten better but still sits below average, and his athleticism in the delivery is the best case for more strikes to come as he moves up. Two plus pitches already give him a floor in relief. As a starter, the question is a breaking ball that holds up, and if one of the three becomes that pitch, a rotation role is in play. With a fastball that carries, a changeup that misses bats, and strike-throwing still improving, the starter outlook rests on the breaker and the strikes. | |||||||||||
