MLB Draft Countdown: #45, Justin Lange, RHP, Llano HS (TX)

Player: Justin Lange Draft Day Age: 18
School: Llano HS (TX) Position(s): RHP
Height: 6’4” Weight: 190 lbs. Bats: Right Throws: Right
Fastball: Touched triple digits this spring but sits more 91-96 with solid command of fastball. Ball runs when in his sitting velocity, flattens out in upper 90s. Was in 88-91 a year ago.
Change: Incredibly raw offering that is rarely used. Have only seen one or two on tape, upside of average but long way to get there.
Slider: Inconsistent, slurvy when 79-81, much better when 83-85. At best, sharp with plenty of bite but not shown often. Likely above average pitch but can dream on it becoming plus.
Delivery/Mechanics: Command a real concern. Low 3/4 slot but inconsistent with arm slot. Big leg kick with solid balance. Tall and fall, little leg drive. Medium effort but arm gets good extension. Heavy follow through.
Summary: Projectable body that added plenty of muscle that can help explain the big jump in fastball. If going off his performance at Area Code Games he could be a good candidate to make it to Dallas Baptist, but the improvement means he will be a round two pick. Easy to get lost in his big velo and moments the slider flashes plus to take a shot in round one. Recent history of prep righties to get to triple digits late in high school may hurt him as track record isn’t good. There is upside of a number two starter, but the floor is very low. Worth a shot but not an arm you can rely on as a future impact piece. Like him better for a team with a deep system that can move him slow, a level a season, to maximize chances at reaching potential.
