Player: Christian Oppor
School: Gulf Coast State College Position(s): LHP
Height: 6’2″ Weight: 175 lbs. Bats: Left Throws: Left
Pitches: Fastball: Sits 94-96 been up to 98. Some sink and run thanks to arm angle. Plus potential. Breaking Ball: Mixes between a curve and slider without a ton of difference between them. At the upper 70s, ball falls off table late without much shape. Mid-70s more of a two plane breaker but easier to read. Change: 76-77, Still very raw, body slows some. Backs up well late. Below-average potential
Delivery/Mechanics: The mechanics are a mixed bag as the arm action just screams reliever, but the athleticism, extension, and arm speed are real. Upper arm in a low 3/4 position, but some elbow bend leads to a release between low and true 3/4 and some command issues. Gets really good extension with legs but ends up almost too wide leading to late effort.
Other: Selected 334th overall in 11th round by Oakland Athletics in 2022
Summary: Such a tough evaluation, there is a lot to like but a lot to be concerned with too. The breaking ball(s) are just too inconsistent right now and I don’t have great hope for the change. The fastball is real, and there is enough potential in the breaking ball(s) to see real upside. Have watched tape from front, back, and both sides, and three of the four angles give me real concern with the delivery but from behind it actually looks more in control than others. There is a TON of potential here, and there will certainly be MLB teams very interested in him, but I am still not totally sold.
