Player: Zach Swanson
School: Toutle Lake HS Position(s): RHP
Height: 6’3″ Weight: 195 lbs. Bats: Right Throws: Right
Pitches: Fastball: 90-96, sits 90-94, Good tail. Average to better pitch Slider: 80-85, sits 82-84, Sharp vertical action. CB shape with SL velo. Falls off table. 2800+ spin rate. Plus potential. Changeup: Inconsistent, seen as low as 83 and as high at 88. At best shows good dip. Below average with average potential, needs a lot of fine tuning.
Delivery/Mechanics: 3/4 with good extension but can have some mild arm bend at times. Late effort through head and shoulders. Shoulders can open too early causing arm to lag and really miss spots. Works with pace.
Other: Oregon State commit.
Summary: Swanson started the MLB HS All American Game inside T-Mobile Park during All-Star weekend and grew up under two hours south of the ballpark. The stage may have been a bit too big as he struggle with command but the stuff flashed. The fastball currently sits in the low-to-mid-90s but has plenty of projection to sit 96 where he rarely touches currently. The breaking ball is a genuine plus pitch and the change has potential. The arm and actions are loose, but there are inconsistencies in the delivery that need to be ironed out. Oregon State commits are always on the tougher side to sign, but a good completion to the summer showcase season and a solid spring could land him at the end of Day One, but more likely a Day Two pick.
