Player: Derek Curiel
School: Orange Lutheran (CA) Position(s): OF
Height: 6’2″ Weight: 175 lbs. Bats: Left Throws: Left
Hit: Easy plus. Smooth stroke from slightly open stance. Line drive approach that uses whole field. Balance, quick bat, advanced approach. As polished a hit tool as you will find in HS baseball. https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js |
Power: Limited currently but has potential to develop into average. Body still very lean and the approach is to use whole field, but can really turn on the ball in BP.
Run: Above average to plus.
Arm: Average to better arm strength but throws are accurate allowing the arm to play better than the pure strength.
Glove: Plus defensive center fielder. Excellent routes, plays the position with maturity. https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js |
Other: LSU commit. Will be 19 at draft.
Summary: Curiel is a guy who does everything so smooth and efficiently that you almost miss how good he is. The swing is quiet but has real bat speed allowing him to tap into gap power currently and will get more in the future. Long and lean, but has full control of his body. He has the approach to the game of a guy with years of pro experience but is still in high school. While the lack of power limits the “superstar” ceiling, he has a genuine claim to be the first prep player to hear his name called in the 2024 draft.
