2024 MLB Draft: Caleb Bonemer, SS/3B, Okemos HS

Player: Caleb Bonemer
School: Okemos HS (MI)                                                  Position(s): SS/3B
Height: 6’1″                    Weight: 195 lbs.                    Bats: Right                       Throws: Right
Hit: Lacks consistent contact. Shoulders start a bit closed, Giancarlo Stanton-esque setup. Pull hitter leads to missing barrel too often. Big hacks, plenty of swing and miss. Wide base with minimal moving parts could easily be tweaked into a solid tool though. https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Power: Plus potential, launched two bombs at 2023 PG National. The first from closed position generates real bat speed and ball really jumps off bat. Some question how much that will translate to pro ball as pitching gets better given the contact concerns.
Run: 6.30 60-yard dash says plus, big hacks lead to slow home-to-first times. Overall average.
Arm: More than enough for left side. Not quite plus but above average.
Glove: Some upper body stiffness up the middle but solid glove and footwork. Likely better suited for third where he would be above-average defender, average at best at short.
Other: University of Virginia commit.
Summary: Bonemer had as good a showcase circuit as anyone, putting on a show at PG National and having an outstanding Area Code Games. The raw power and speed is a fun combination, but there is some concern about his ability to truly tap into either. The big hacks at the plate lead to far too many soft contact swings and he is slow out of the box when he does find the gap. That said, when he makes solid contact, the ball rockets off the bat. I was unimpressed with him at short but think he can be a really good third baseman. With some minor tweaks to his approach and swing he can tap into his power better in game action and could be an impact bat at the pro level.
