Player: Joey Oakie
School: Ankney Centennial (IA) Position(s): RHP
Height: 6’3″ Weight: 195 lbs. Bats: Right Throws: Right
Pitches: Fastball: 93-96, Plenty of sink and run. Heavy offering, will really do well once facing wood bats as pro. Has plus potential. Slider: 83-85, sharp late breaker with depth. Will easily be plus if not better. One of the better current breaking balls in HS crop. Nearing 3k rpm. Change: Rarely used, need to see more.
Delivery/Mechanics: Mix between drop and drive and tall and fall but gets good extension with lower half. Very low 3/4 to sidearm delivery. Quiet windup, almost starts in stretch and mild step. Repeatable lower half although the top half has some effort through the shoulders and hips. Arm not always in sync with hip fire, but quick arm action. Command inconsistent.
Other: Iowa Commit, seen reports of being 6′ and others as tall as 6’3″.

Summary: Oakie has a shot to be the second pure prep arm taken in July but highlights the lack of depth in the class. He is a good pitcher and has the upside of being a number three starter but lacks a viable third offering and has plenty of reliever risk. If the changeup develops into something that can get hitters out consistently, he will be able to stick as a starter and be a solid option, even if it is a third or fourth starter. There is a lot of risk reward here, as his two pitches are legit, but the body control and lack of third offering just leaves a lot of question marks. Probably projected to be a late first round guy now, but I would prefer to take him in round two if not day two.
