| Summary: Don’t let the college ERA of 5.48 fool you, there is still a ton to like in the right arm of Smith. He has a fastball that works in the low-to-mid 90s but been up to 96 with some carry, especially up in the zone, it is the secondary stuff that makes Smith special. He has a gyro slider/cutter that gets a ton of swing-and-miss sitting in the mid-80s. On top of that he has a power curve in the mid-70s and a change with plenty of movement in the mid-80s. Smith has a true starter’s arsenal and enough command to give plenty of hopes he can stick in a rotation at the next level. That said, he does catch too much of the plate too often allowing even his elite stuff to get hit too often, so pitch placement is something that really needs improving in 2024. | |||||||||||
