| Summary: There are some who like Essenburg as a power hitting right fielder, but there is risk he turns into an average bat first baseman and there is just too much to like on the mound. In the battle of the Lincoln Way directional high schools, Essenburg outpitched Jack Bauer, in part due to the fact he hit a home run himself in the matchup. The fastball sits in the low 90s and has been up to 95 with plenty of run and carry up in the zone, but he can sink it in the lower half too. His slider has curveball velo but a ton of lateral sweep to go with some real depth leading many to call it a curveball. Either way, it is a pitch that projects to average or better, although he can get under the ball a bit too often. He also has the makings of a solid changeup in the low 80s that gives solid fade at its best. There is a bit too much of a track record of overthrowing and losing command, but nothing that can’t be ironed out especially if he transitions to the bump full time. | |||||||||||
