| Summary: Physicality and raw strength jump off the page with Jaxon Matthews, a lefthanded hitter whose bat speed and power projection put him among the bigger upside bats in the class. His swing generates easy plus raw power with lift, and he’s already shown the ability to leave the yard to all fields—including taking a 91 mph fastball out the other way for a grand slam at the UA Next All American Game, but proceed to strike out his next three trips to the dish. When on time, the contact is loud and capable of carrying a lineup. There’s risk in the swing, however. Matthews employs a deep hand load with a late hitch and a steep path, which can leave him vulnerable to premium velocity and spin. The approach is aggressive and geared for power, but the swing-and-miss rates point to a need for refinement against better pitching. His ability to make adjustments in-zone will be key to unlocking the full hit/power potential. Defensively, Matthews runs well enough to get looks in center and has a plus arm, but his physical build and overall profile point more comfortably to right field. The combination of arm strength, power upside, and athleticism give him the ingredients of a middle-of-the-order corner outfielder if the contact rate trends upward. | |||||||||||
