Summary:
As a redshirt sophomore, Carson Jasa of Nebraska presents one of the most intriguing profiles of any pitcher eligible to be selected in the draft this summer. Standing an imposing 6’7”, the Colorado product has displayed some truly eye-popping stuff throughout his collegiate career, and will look to take the next step for a Cornhusker squad looking to break through in a talented Big 10 conference this spring before heading off to pro ball. His only problem has been his inability to prevent walks, and whether or not he can solve it will determine just how far his impressive arsenal can take him.

In his repertoire, Jasa has 4 pitches, though none has impressed as much as his fastball. It makes hitters miss with both velocity and movement, routinely clocking in at 97+ mph on the radar gun while generating upwards of 2700 RPM when tracked this summer, carrying over bats with ease. He also displays a curveball with similarly dizzying spin numbers of 2900 RPM, with sharp break and a near 20 mph difference from the fastball, at 77-82 mph. It functions well as both a swing and miss pitch, as well as a tunnel pitch with his fastball, and he is comfortable throwing it both in and outside of the strike zone. After the two main offerings, Jasa will also feature a hybrid cutter/slider in the low 90s and a splitter in the mid to high 80’s, though he is still tinkering with and developing with both.

Mechanically, Jasa ensures that he gets the most out of his lanky frame, with a deliberate windup that gives way to a wide arm circle and over-the-top delivery. He gets on top of the baseball very well as he releases it, which allows him to produce the incredible spin numbers discussed earlier. He gets down the mound effectively as well, generating good extension and making a lively fastball look even faster. The throwing motion is consistent and repeatable throughout all 4 pitches, and is extremely athletic.

Overall, Jasa is certainly someone to watch as he progresses towards the draft this summer. He has all of the tools to succeed, and if he can start to put his control issues behind him, both Nebraska and the team that ends up calling his name will have a top-level pitcher on their hands.
