| Summary: Few amateur position players in recent years carried a louder single tool than Rainer’s arm, a true 70-grade weapon that would have drawn early-round attention had he focused solely on pitching. That arm strength translates cleanly to the left side of the infield in the Tigers system, letting him finish plays from deep in the hole, throw on the move with carry, and make momentum-killing throws that most shortstops simply can’t. It’s the foundational trait that keeps him on the dirt long term, whether at shortstop or as a high-impact defender at third. Offensively, the left-handed bat brings real thunder. Early pro looks showed the same bat strength and top-end exit velocities he flashed as an amateur, with future plus or better power projection once the swing tightens. There’s still some length created by the bat wrap, and strike consistency will need to sharpen, but he recognizes spin well for a young hitter and shows enough zone feel to project into at least an average hitter with impact. Before the shoulder injury halted his first full season, the ball jumped off the barrel with the kind of ease that hints at middle-of-the-order upside. Defensively, the physicality, steady actions, and improving range all support a left-side profile, but the arm is what sets him apart. It widens his margin for error, allows for deeper positioning, and gives him the ability to turn plays late with velocity and accuracy from any angle. Even if he ultimately slides to third base, the arm becomes a premium asset rather than just a fit. Assuming the shoulder returns to full health, Rainer projects as a high-ceiling left-side infielder with star-level potential driven by elite arm strength and emerging offensive impact. | |||||||||||
