| Summary: Lopez was one of a handful of collegiate players to feature in this year’s WBC, pitching for Team Brazil. The nod was more than deserved, as the right-hander has been very effective across his time for Columbia. His time with Brazil was highlighted by an appearance against Team USA, where he did give up 4 runs, but recorded a strikeout of Bobby Witt Jr. In his arsenal, Lopez features 5 pitches. His 2 main offerings are a sinker and a fastball, both clocking in around 94-95 mph with spin at about 2100 RPM. He compliments them with a slider with late break, and a big breaking curveball that sits around 78 mph. He rounds out his arsenal with a cutter that he mostly uses to right handed hitters. Mechanically, Lopez is pretty unique out of the stretch. He starts with his back turned nearly all the way away from the hitter, with his left leg turned back towards second base. He then rears back and fires from a lower arm slot. The delivery elicits comparisons to Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert, and has been very effective for Lopez so far. | |||||||||||
