| Summary: The power is as loud as any in the minors and it isn’t a mirage. A 6’7″ left-handed hitter with plus-plus raw power and the bat speed to access it pole to pole, Jones can mishit balls out of any part of any ballpark — the hard-hit rates and exit velocity numbers are among the best in professional baseball and the production has backed it up. Plus speed that plays on the bases gives the profile a dimension that separates him from a pure corner power type, though a corner outfield or first base role is the most likely long-term home as the frame continues to fill out. The swing-and-miss is the defining variable and it has been extreme. A deliberate coil into the backside with an open setup creates stiffness and head movement that hinders spin recognition, chase rates against breaking balls have been alarming, and the strikeout rate has climbed rather than stabilized as the competition level has risen. The contact and zone contact rates have both sat well below the threshold at which a player can project as an everyday option — hot streaks are historic, cold streaks equally prodigious. Recent swing adjustments show a willingness to address the issues, and time will tell how much they move the needle against advanced pitching. The three true outcome regular profile is the realistic ceiling if the hit tool improvements take hold — the power is immense enough to carry the offensive profile if the strikeout rate becomes manageable rather than extreme. Without meaningful contact gains, the platoon and bench scenarios become the more likely outcomes regardless of how loud the raw tools are. | |||||||||||
