| Summary: Sophomore RHP Grant Govel has been a major key to success for the USC Trojans in 2026. He has impressed with his efficiency and effectiveness on the mound against some of the top talent in NCAA baseball. At 6’0” and 200 lbs, Govel is a strike-throwing righty with a lot of confidence and a physical build. His sturdy, powerful frame complements his ability to go deep into games and maintain his velocity throughout the season. With a strong base and defined forearms, Govel uses his mass and strength well on the mound to produce consistent quality outings. His mix consists of a FB, CT, SL, CB, and CH. All of which have unique uses and shapes. He commands the FB well, sitting at 91-92 in-game, and locates on the outer half to set up batters. He opts to use the SL as his put-away pitch often and flashes the 12-6 CB to get ahead of batters or to affect timing in deeper counts. The SL has significant horizontal break with good vertical depth, creating swing-and-miss. The righty has also been able to utilize the CH well this season, which works off of the FB and breaks opposite of his SL at similar velo. Grant’s game plan of attacking the strike zone complements his ability to command his mix and throw offspeed in any count. He can affect timing and produce a lot of defensive swings, which allows him to work quickly and get deeper into games. There is plenty of strikeout ability in his game. He’s struck out eight or more batters in four different starts this season. With that said, he is happy to let his defense work behind him, producing weak contact and moving quickly through innings, a quality that not many young pitchers possess. He works out of the stretch, a high leg lift, and a load into his back leg leads into his compact stride down the mound. He rotates over his planted lead leg and releases from a low 12 O’clock window, reminiscent of a catcher’s throwing slot. With Govel’s physicality, pitch mix, and mentality on the mound, he will continue to be a dominant right-handed starter. A proven ability to work deep into games and feel for all of his pitches makes him a tough matchup, even at the professional level. As he matures and refines his breaking ball, he should command plenty of attention in this upcoming draft. | |||||||||||
