Summary:

Another member of UCLA’s elite infield, Roman Martin, has proved to be a consistent talent on both sides of the baseball diamond. The junior has filled out physically over the years and landed at the hot corner for the Bruins. At 6’2” 208 lbs. Martin has grown to fit the corner infielder profile and done well sharing the left side of the infield with the projected #1 pick in the 2026 MLB draft.

A Southern California native, Roman shows plus arm strength at 3rd base, with balance and patience, looking to create clean hops for himself in the field. Has smooth glove actions and a fluid transfer. His poised defensive timing is backed by his plus arm strength, allowing him to make plays in the hole confidently. Shows good range to his left and right. With not much opportunity for him to play SS for the Bruins, it will be interesting to see if he is still a viable option up the middle. The tools and overall make-up make that a possibility for him, but he has dealt with some fielding errors in the past that will need to be cleaned up.

Offensively, he has been a reliable bat and staple in the heart of the order for UCLA, posting a .991 OPS on the season. His approach is simple and effective, looking to make line-drive contact and get pitchers inside the zone. He understands the importance of quality at-bats and taking his walks to create opportunity for runs. His minimal approach at the plate is matched by his stance and swing mechanics. Martin spreads out to an athletic stance, quietly rocks into his back leg, and quickly loads his hands into the slot. The swing path is compact and level, creating low back-spin line drives when he catches barrel. Not much Homerun power to his offensive game, but will square up mistakes and make pitchers pay with extra bases.
