| Summary: Casteel is a projectible right handed pitcher from Western,PA committed to West Virginia. The righty just capped off a dominant senior season where he went 65.2 innings, going 10-0 while striking out 103 batters, walking only 11, and posting a miniscule 0.64 era. Casteel brings a three pitch mix to the fold with a fastball touching 95 mph (sitting 90-93 mph) with carry. Given his long levers Casteel gets above average extension, allowing the fastball to play up. He has shown a lower 3/4 slot of late and as a result we’ve seen slight variations on his breaking ball. At times it shows more like a true slider in the lower to mid-80’s. It has also shown as a sweeper with more horizontal movement and velo closer to 81-83 mph. The change up is a pitch he has become more comfortable with, showing the ability to throw it for strikes consistently (84-86 mph). Casteel sets up on the first base side of the rubber, with a controlled leg lift and a quiet upper half. The arm is loose with whip, as he works around a firm front side. Casteel does show variation at times with his glove side, though it has not inhibited his ability to throw strikes. Command is key for Casteel as he continues to showcase the ability to move all three pitches within the zone. He has true feel for his arsenal and brings a plan on how to execute each time out. He is equipped with a durable frame, with more room for strength. There is a possibility for the fastball to tick up into the upper 90’s range as that growth comes. With three pitches that play, the ability to throw strikes and a frame with more in the tank, Casteel could become a legitimate starting prospect in the right organization. | |||||||||||
