| Summary: Tommy John surgery has kept Hurd off the mound for an extended stretch, but the early returns as he ramps back up have been encouraging — commanding three offerings well in limited action and showing the arsenal quality that made him an attractive arm before the injury. The fastball sits 93-96 and climbs to 98 with arm-side run and carry from a low three-quarter slot, and elite spin rates on both breaking balls give the secondary mix a quality that few returning pitchers can claim. The slider is the signature offering — a sweeper shape with big horizontal break and the velocity and shape to profile as a genuine plus weapon. A high-spin curveball with sharp 12-6 action and two-plane depth rounds out a three-pitch mix with above-average or better potential across all offerings. A changeup has been explored as a fourth option but velocity separation and shape have made it difficult to develop into a reliable weapon, with a kick change emerging as the more natural fit given his arm action. The back-end starter path is realistic if the command takes a meaningful step as he builds back up — the arsenal quality is already there and the athleticism gives the delivery a workable foundation.
