2026 MLB Draft: Derek Curiel, OF, LSU

Player: Derek Curiel
School: LSUPosition(s): OF
Height: 6’3″Weight: 192 lbs. Bats: Left Throws: Left
Summary:
Curiel, a draft eligible sophomore continued his ascent as a top OF prospect in an otherwise disappointing season for the Tigers. One of the top pure hitters in this year’s draft, Curiel displays bat to ball skill that will play for a long time to come. Though not considered a power threat currently, Curiel has demonstrated the ability to induce hard contact to all fields with impressive exit velocities. His barrel control in all four quadrats of the zone stand out.

He sets up in the box with a wide base and hands slotted high directly out front. He establishes consistent rhythm pre-pitch and minimizes excess movement. With a moderate leg lift his hands load back in line with his left shoulder creating controlled separation. The bat stays through the zone for a long period of time using all fields. Curiel flashes solid to above average speed, logging ten more stolen bases in 2026 (13).

Defensively, Curiel moved from leftfield to centerfield for LSU in 2026. He continues to progress with routes and overall IQ. His arm strength is average but accurate, profiling him in center or leftfield as a pro.

He’s a prospect that has trended upward as we’ve moved closer to the draft. Many see him as a safe pick and one that falls between the 10-15th overall.
