| Summary: Plaz is a compact, densely built hitter whose calling card is what happens when he squares the ball up — comfortably plus raw power that’s produced some of the loudest exit-velocity readings anyone at his level has posted over the past two seasons, with strength through the hands and a powerful rotational swing that lets him do real damage to all fields. Injuries have interrupted the track record at points, but the bat has kept showing up whenever he’s been on the field. The approach is the swing skill to watch. He can get overly aggressive, chasing more than evaluators would like and settling into stretches where the strikeouts pile up, but there’s been real, recent improvement — a better overall approach and a trimmed strikeout rate this past season suggest the aggression is starting to come with more selectivity attached, even if the track record isn’t long enough yet to call it settled. Defensively, the picture is genuinely uncertain in both directions. The arm is a real asset, and the receiving has taken visible steps forward, particularly to the glove side — the kind of progress that gives him a real chance to stick as a part-time catcher. But he’s still limited moving out of his stance, ball-blocking remains a work in progress, and the total time caught above the lower levels is still fairly limited, leaving real risk that the profile eventually settles at first base instead. The bet here is on the bat carrying the profile regardless of where he ends up defensively — plus raw power and an approach trending in the right direction give him a real shot at everyday impact, with the defensive outcome determining whether that comes as a part-time catcher or a more traditional power-hitting corner bat. | |||||||||||
