| Summary: McCoy is a left-hander who throws from a low release point with a quick arm, an angle that makes the ball hard to pick up. The fastball touches 98 and normally runs 92-94, with natural cutting action and carry that make it especially effective in the upper half of the zone. His stuff outpaces his command, and he goes after hitters. The slider is the better of his breaking pitches, a sweeping offering with big spin and two planes of movement that runs hard away from left-handed hitters. At times he firms it up into the mid-80s for a tighter, harder break. A cutter adds another weapon that hitters have to account for. Both the fastball and the slider could grade plus if his command takes a further step. The changeup trails far behind, a pitch he rarely throws that shows an occasional big shape but isn’t well controlled, and it’s his main item for improvement. The command is the key. He has a history of below-average control and little track record to lean on, and the question is whether it keeps improving. A torn UCL ended a season for him and cost him innings, which leaves the picture less settled. He projects as a starter if the strikes come, with the velocity and the breaking ball giving him enough to lead a rotation. If the command holds back, the stuff would still play best in shorter stints. | |||||||||||
