Summary:
It’s rare for a player’s name to double as his job description, but Catcher Hopkins earns it. He’s an athletic, springy receiver who pops up from his crouch with rhythm and has a plus arm that puts throws on target at second base. He covers ground side to side, runs well in a straight line, and will put his body in front of balls in the dirt to protect his pitcher. His frame is built to stay behind the plate, with lower-half strength still to come.

The receiving has been trending up. The hands have gotten quieter, and the reaching lunge at pitches has faded. Defense is the safest part of his profile, and he’s one of the stronger defensive catchers of his class, with catcher as his permanent address.

At the plate, he switch-hits, and the two sides offer a tradeoff. His right-handed swing is the steadier one, with a tight, line-drive path. Left-handed, he stands tall with a little bat movement and a moderate leg kick, and he’s looking to pull, though his front foot drifts open at times. That side has the larger upside and the lower reliability right now. He’s an athletic runner for the position.

The glove gives him a floor most catching prospects don’t have, and the bat adds appeal. If the left side catches up to the right, his offensive ceiling climbs, and if it doesn’t, he should still be a catcher who earns his keep behind the plate.
