| Summary: Compton is a left-handed hitter built compactly and strong through his whole frame, and raw power is what defines him. It grades plus to double-plus, it jumps off the barrel with a quick, tidy swing, and he can drive the ball anywhere, with the most damage coming when he pulls it. His bat speed and his physical strength are what give this profile its ceiling. The hit tool is the main risk. Earlier looks credited him with a real feel for hitting, but in his last season as an amateur his pitch recognition slipped, and he was overmatched by hard velocity and by spin. He swings for damage and is frequently beaten. His walk numbers show some ability to get on base, but the swing decisions and the contact have to improve for the game power to match the raw power. That gap is the central question for his development. Left field is his home, and the defense doesn’t add much there. His range is below average, his reads and routes are shaky, and the arm is fringy. He runs about as well as an average outfielder, and the organization has pushed him to be more aggressive on the bases. He’ll also see time at first base to give him some flexibility, which is a way to add value without relying on the glove. The bat has to carry him, and the power and strength give him the tools to do it. If the contact and the pitch recognition come along, he has the ceiling of a middle-of-the-order bat. His development depends on closing the gap between the raw power and what he can actually produce. | |||||||||||
